Amazon.com is regtig ‘n handige webwerf.
” The Biology of Belief”.
Kyk na die eerste 5 ster beoordeling ….. presies die een wat Douwe in Wetenskap 7 aangebied het.
Geskryf deur ene Gerald Tennant, ‘n optalmoloog .. wat so begin : “I am a physician who turns 65 this week. My career was and is punctuated by the harassment one receives when one is challenging medical dogma …..”
What a total load of horse-hockey
Between the low-quality “rah-rah-go-team you can do it if you believe” tripe, and the overhyped, incorrect deductions about quantum theory, this book is of even less quality than “Dianetics.” The AmWay-esque nature of the various reviewers giving their raves here I can only explain as a pack of christian frothers praying desperately to find some way to arrogate personal belief above genuine reality.
Bad news, kids, the real world still exists, and microbes will still gleefully eat you if you don’t deal with them. Tumors will still kill you, no matter what god you pray to. A broken neck will still paralyze you, regardless of how “right” you’ve been living.
While a positive attitude most certainly has been evidenced to help the healing process, belief in and of itself is not a curative agent. Didn’t Mary Baker Eddy teach you all that when she died? For those of you who are wondering, she’s the founder of Christian Science – which is the religion that can claim ownership of this “Power of Belief” idea. And for those who weren’t aware, she’s still dead.
I will stipulate, as I have done in the past for similar attempts to spin this fantasy, that this book’s contents are worse than simply false: they are irresponsibly so. Praying at an illness or injury, while it may enhance your attitude (and thereby assist you in a minor way), will cost you in the long run if you allow it to occlude seeking genuine medical attention.
Particularly if what ails you threatens to kill you.
But then, if it ends up killing you because you were foolish enough to ignore your illness…Darwin (and good old Watson-and-Cricke biology) wins. How ironic.
Ek kliek toe maar uit nuuskierigheid op hierdie ongelowige Thomas se ” see all my reviews”
Boem ! wat maak oop ?
Raai wat ?
5 Sterre !!
Yes. Wat kan ek sê ? Great minds …. 🙂

How do you begin? I looked this over and realized I had not written a review of this book, in spite of considering it probably one of my favorite books of all time.
This book is an excellent walk through history into the (relatively) present day, detailing various effects of pseudoscience and other brain-junk, and showing how simple skeptical thought can help overcome this in everyday life. Sagan uses the term “baloney detector” as a tongue-in-cheek reference to keeping a skeptical mindset…and I firmly believe that every child in our country – no, make that our world – should be given this tool. I cannot recommend this book more strongly, the skill of skepticism being that valuable.
Children, adults – anyone can use the ability to eliminate BS from their lives, and this book is an excellent resource on how to help do just that.
Buy two. You’re going to want to give one to a friend.
