Karre en kinders | Cars and Kids

October 12, 2019 in Uncategorized

This not a post about cars really, it is much more a post about being taught by my son how wonderful it is to have him. It may even be a book review.

Kinders maak jou weerloos. | Kids make you vulnerable.

Karre laat jou dink. | Cars make you think.

Vir die Afrikaanse teks, rol asseblief af. Hier praat ek eers gou oor Máire Fisher se The Enumerations – ‘n wonderlike boek.

***

I am busy reading Máire Fisher’s achingly beautiful novel The Enumerations. It is a tour de force and says so much about parenting.

Somehow, in the midst of this, my son dragged me out of bed on a cold, windy morning to go and see fast cars. I wrote about it and posted many more pictures in LitNet, click here for the post.

Then a friend, Elra Diedericks, made a small comment that meant so much to me. She is a devoted mother and understands the sacrifices of parenting. Yet, she also embraces the joys coming with it.

Off late my son has become a friend, a teacher even. Yes, he has lots to learn, but even so, he teaches me how much I have to learn. Erla has a similar friendship with her son, which is so beautiful to see and to learn from.

A book like The Enumerations, on the other hand, teaches me just how much there is to be thankful for.

I do not want to say too much about the story in The Enumerations, except that is a wonderfully crafted work about the challenges parents face, about love, about a sister’s love for her brother, and essentially about two teenagers who has to break down walls that their parents have created to protect themselves from the world, and hence to their children at a safe distance.

The Enumerations, by Máire Fisher, is published by Umuzi. All good stores like, Bargain Books, Exclusive Books, Loot, Takealot, Graffiti and many more will help you get it.

This not a post about cars really, it is much more a post about being taught by my son how wonderful it is to have him.

It is also a post about two authors who, each in their own way, have made me see parenting and the joys it brings in a new light, without ever taking away the heartache and vulnerability that children inadvertently place in one’s path.

Thank you to the Zen masters of the world!

By the way: Many, many years ago my son and I went to see Cars in the cinema. I never saw the end, because he had to go and poo.

Never mind. We did buy the DVD. Then I saw the entire movie fifteen times, if not more.

Kinders maak ’n mens weerloos. Hulle leer jou so baie.

So, kom ons praat liewer oor my seun. En tog, ’n mens leer so baie.
