Sharpeville, the truth

What REALLY happened at Sharpville?

“Just a year before the declaration of the Republic, an event occurred at Sharpeville in the Transvaal, in 1960, which would resonate around the world, and forever-after be used as anti-Afrikaner propaganda. A mob of about 6,000 blacks, protesting against a law which compelled them to carry identification-passes allowing them to work in “white” areas, surrounded a police station. The ostensibly “peaceful” demonstration turned ugly when a woman inserted a gasoline-soaked rag into the fuel-receptacle of a police vehicle and then lit it. The resultant explosion panicked the small contingent of besieged policemen (already on edge due to the fact that NINE YOUNG POLICEMEN HAD RECENTLY BEEN HACKED AND BURNT TO DEATH BY A MOB IN DURBAN) .

A known criminal in the crowd then fired a shot at a policeman he recognized, standing in the doorway. The commander at Sharpeville ordered his policemen to be ready to shoot, but only if the masses broke down the fence; their last line of defense around the police station. When the mob stormed through the fence, firing broke out, and 69 of the rioters were killed.

The senior police commander Lt. Colonel Pienaar later told a commission of inquiry into the “Sharpeville Massacre” that: … “The Native mentality does not allow for a peaceful demonstration. For them to gather [together], means violence.” ..

Although the white Afrikaner, by virtue of their 3 centuries of contact with black Africans, could claim to “know” them better than any other white nation did, a liberal media’s spin on these events, led to a world-wide perception that the Afrikaners were violent “white supremacists” and thus International sanctions against them were necessary.” – Bulala, by author Cuan Eglin

I knew someone who lived there and they said that it was one trigger-happy policeman who disobeyed orders. Despite that, it must have been very frightening for such a small contingent of uniformed men to see such a large mass of protesters. I think what brought the wrath of everyone upon the white South Africans, was that some of the protesters had been shot in the back and had no weapons in their hands. Maybe it’s time that everyone just became more forgiving and tolerant, because most of the adults of that time are now dead and my husband, who was then only 6 years old, whose parents are also dead, must still suffer and pay the price for that terrible day, just because he is white. Was Carel de Wet not the mayor or something like that, in the Vaal Triangle, at the time? I wonder what his account of that day looked like. Blame-shifting is not going to be of any productive use to any race in South Africa. A willingness to learn from the past and not make similar mistakes, should be the motto of everyone, of all races – nobody is pure, innocent and without sin.

  3. “The Native mentality does not allow for a peaceful demonstration.” ?????????????????

Die boek is A Massacre and it’s consequences deur Tom Lodge.

  6. Dis so jammer daai ding het gebeur en nog erger dat die hele ding so verdraai word om sekere mense se ideologiese doelwitte te pas.

  7. Ek ken myself baie goed en eerlikheid is eerste in my lewe.

As ek somkyk na meeste demonstrasies, veral onlangs, lyk dit voorwaar vir my of die ou reg was.

  9. Ongelukkig is jy reg.

  10. It does not mean they were shot in the back on purpose. While some were running aways others were attacking and by the nature of the engagement it should not be strange that backshots happened.

The problem is that this is overlooked and ignored by people who only want their way seen.

Ek is bly vir jou as JY jouself sou kon inhou. Mense is ongelukkig nie dieselfde nie. Mense verskil.

Die manier hoe hierdie stuk geksryf is is waarlik teleurstellend. Dit is daai ou voorspelbare ding van ‘my wit vel maak my beter as hulle’.

  14. Jy is verkeerd.
