Cape Town – While South
Africa and many other countries struggle with prisons filled to
capacity, the Dutch justice ministry has announced that it will close
eight prisons as a decline in crime has left many cells empty.
The Netherlands deputy justice minister Nebahat Albayrak made
the announcement last week, prompting a debate in the Dutch parliament
over the loss of jobs and conviction rates, Radio Netherlands reported.
The country faced a shortage of prison cells in the 1990s but a
recent decline in crime has since led to a capacity for 14 000
prisoners but only 12 000 detainees. The closures will results in a
lost of 1 200 jobs, Albayrak said.
The ministry’s research department expects the declining crime
rate to continue for some time. Three prisons will be closed this year
and the rest in 2012, saving the country about €164m.
