Roger Ballen Photo Competition: My “Dorp”

Januarie 10, 2011 in Sonder kategorie

(‘n Afrikaanse weergawe van hierdie dokument is beskikbaar. Sien asseblief die volgende inskrywing.)

Today Roger Ballen is a name closely associated with DIE ANTWOORD. Zeff, ek sê. However, his roots (or maybe his routes?) go much deeper into the South African soil than rap fans would realise. To celebrate his roots (or maybe his routes?) Protea has just published DORPS, a collection of his iconic earlier works – some of which have never been seen before. These are from a time before Zeff. When antwoord simply meant answer. When life was slower.

This is a classic – a must-have in any photographer’s collection. Says Ballen: “In many ways I feel as if I have recorded the elements of a dying culture. I photographed these towns in the hope of ‘freezing’ time and arresting the utter extinction of the South African dorp.”

And we invite you to join in the fun. Our photo competition is called My “Dorp”. Send us your photographs of that place that you call “Dorp” – be it a city slum or a pristine rural town you may once have driven through. Remember, you retain full copyright of your photographs.

Protea is giving away three fabulous prices, one each for:

  1. The best black and white photograph
  2. The best colour photograph
  3. The best of nostalgia

Roger Ballen himself will select the winning photographs!

Each winner will receive a signed copy of DORPS and a gift voucher for R500 to be exchanged for any other Protea books. Please send entries to foto@proteaboekhuis.co.za (the rules are below.) Please forward this e-mail to anyone who might be interested. The closing date is 1 March 2011.
