Justice for Leigh Matthews: Hot off the press! Moodley denied leave to appeal

In this case, at least, justice prevailed! Just received from e-blockwatch.

Donovan Moodley made what was possibly his last public appearance on Wednesday when he lost his application for leave to appeal against his life sentence.

The man who murdered Leigh Matthews is trying everything in his power to get out of jail, and now has only the Supreme Court of Appeal as his last resort.

Joburg High Court Judge Joop Labuschagne ruled that Moodley’s reasons for filing his application four years late were “extremely meagre and totally unsatisfactory”.

Explaining that he had carefully reconsidered his judgment and the life sentence handed down to Moodley, Judge Labuschagne said he believed he had not misdirected himself in any way, nor had the sentence been “grossly excessive”.

Moodley’s counsel, Advocate Charles Thompson, had also asked for a special entry to be noted. Judge Labuschagne ruled against this too, stating: “I am of the view that the application is frivolous and granting ! it would be an abuse of the process of court and would lead to an appeal where there is no prospect of success.”

Leigh’s father, Rob Matthews, was pleased with the ruling.

“He (Moodley) is contemptuous and it’s the way he deals in life,” Matthews said. “It is why he is so dangerous and why he should be made to spend the rest of his life in jail.”

  1. oh yes – killing seems to be easy, but living with the consequences seems not to be

    3 cheers for the judge

  2. No big surprise there! Justice has prevailed and he will have a long time in jail to think about the heinous crime he committed. Too bad we don’t have the death penalty. He would be an ideal candidate.
