Being present at the moment when truth revealed itself

I have just been to a fascinating exhibition of photographs taken by JM Coetzee as a teenager. The negatives were discovered when Coetzee sold his flat.

There are selfies, photographs of his mother and brother, pictures of his everyday life and pictures of his school life.

Coetzee had a good eye. One picture, of a sheep at a farm dam, was beautiful. Overall his composition was good. He was able to capture sports action very well. Even in low light he excelled.

We should never underestimate the role of the photographer as documenter.

I wish these pictures would be published or made available on a site like LitNet.

I was lucky to see them at the Irma Stern Museum where there were open to the public for only three days.

This is Coetzee’s enlarger. I wonder how many people have worked with these? I have!
