I am in tears. Stefaans Coetzee was 17 years old when he was part of a right-wing cell that had planted a bomb in a packed supermarket. Four people died, several were injured. Olga Macingwane still limps as a result.

Coetzee spent nineteen years in prison. During this time Macingwane visited Coetzee a few times and forgave him.

In prison Coetzee dreamt of the day that he could run the Comrades Marathon. Last year he was released, started training and completed the run in 2016, finishing with more than an hour to spare – twenty minutes before I did.

On Friday Coetzee gave his medal to Macingwane.

Gosh.

Viva the people of South Africa.

Full story here: (In Afrikaans), for back-ground reading, here is an article published while Coetzee was still in prison – already doing good work.

Coetzee is ongeveer agt jaar jonger as ek. Sy helde was Bruce Fordyce en Nick Bester. Hulle was my helde ook.
