Museum

_MG_2955

“Be a tourist in your own town,” is a motto that Canon employs to get people to explore the things around them. When last were you at the local museum?

_MG_2932

_MG_2948

Despite the fact that it was his idea to visit the museum, Jabu ran away when I wanted to photograph him at the rock paintings.

_MG_2929

There is so much to see.

We are all the same, and yet each one of us is unique when we look at our DNA.

_MG_2928

Phophi decided evolution is cool. Why? ‘Cause finally she found a human(oid) that is shorter than she is!

_MG_2950

Most things weigh more than she does, though. Amethyst is her birth stone.

_MG_2945

_MG_2939

The Charles Darwin Exhibit was really cool.

_MG_2943

I was particularly impressed by this exhibit featuring ‘Outa Lappies’, a free-spirited artist who, like the Pietermaritzburg-based Chicken Man, challenged society through his art.

_MG_2944

Phophi was born in Venda (that light blue patch in the top righthand-corner. Fortunately she is a born free, but her dad’s ID Book still reads “Republic of Venda”.

_MG_2962

Elma was rather interested in the birds and the bees. Hmm.

_MG_2934

Na een en twintig jaar kan ek steeds my geliefde se glimlag raaksien in ‘n see van mense.

s phops

If you are wondering, my daughter felt fluish and decided to sleep it off, but Jabu had oodles of fun with our friend Phophi. Why do we like this little loon? Simple: She is just as crazy as we are.

_MG_3001“Wees ‘n toeris in jou eie dorp,” sê Canon.

Canon EOS 7D & Canon EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM

The 7D has a crop-factor sensor. The sensor is smaller than that of a full-frame camera like the 5D. It means that my 16 – 35 mm lens turns into a 25 – 56 mm lens when on the 7D.

_MG_3022

This little one was very interested in my toes.

_MG_2996

And this picture is for my mother.

Moekie, net vir jou!

ALLBasters en selfies

June 18, 2016 in Uncategorized

(Afrikaans below)

On 15 June we saw ALLBasters in the ArtsCape. What a wonderful show. An albaster is a marble. A baster is a person of mixed race. All basters? We are all of mixed decent.

When you look at life through another person’s eyes, as if through a marble, we see a lot in common with the other one.

Please check out the forty pictures I have selected to show the Youth of South Africa as we are today.

IMG_4764 allbasters elma

IMG_4766phophi

Waar is Jabu?

Forty years later: Forty faces of today’s youth

Not everything is hunky-dory

Just before Youth Day, I received a statement from the ATKV (text to be viewed in the Afrikaans version of the blog). It said that, while we have come a very long way, we need to find answers to the dilemmas facing the youth of 2016.

They are correct.

p 15 12 01 Vigsdag Atlantis 3655sqb

I took this picture of a young gangster in Atlantis – with his permission of course. On his hand the word THUG has been tattooed. (Read more here.)

p 15 12 01 Vigsdag Atlantis 3816

There are far too many kids in our country looking after kids.

She raises her fists

l 15 06 30 Addo 77847

The youth of our country gets impatient with the frequent references to things from times before they were born. They want to make a contribution without being shackled to the past, said the ATKV’s statement.

16 03 4 Woordfees 57758

We saw that when young people interrupted shows at the US Woordfees.

p 16 02 19 ATKV Handevat 6960

Not all protests are negative, however.

These learners staged a protest at an ATKV event. It was a very positive protest.

p 16 02 19 ATKV Handevat 6962

They were from the Monument Park High School.  Their protest against child abuse was very positive and totally integrated into the day’s activities.

Create opportunities

The ATKV creates opportunities for young people to speak out; then old folks need to shut up.

a 16 05 25 ATKB AJV Goudini 2048

a 16 05 25 ATKB AJV Goudini 2044

At their recent AGM, the ATKV created a number of break-away sessions led by the youth branches. The older folks could request to speak, and they did, but they also had to listen.

k 15 10 08 Tienertoneel0188

It strikes me, though, how frequently the younger generation uses art to community to us, and to challenge us. Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof from Stellenbosch won ATKV-Tienertoneel (a nation-wide theatre competition) with a piece about how they viewed school.

k 15 10 08 Tienertoneel0424

Randfontein High challenged audiences with a brutal piece about things that happen in teenage correctional facilities. They were met with standing ovations by young and old.

k 15 10 08 Tienertoneel0473

The ATKV quite rightly says that the more than 20 million young people in our country are telling the older generations: No longer about us, but with us.

k 15 10 08 Tienertoneel0520

Jan van Riebeeck High’s multimedia show

l 14 12 06 riel 3_072

No longer about us, but with us.

Listen to us.

Even this young riel dancer in her traditional garb is challenging the existing order. The young ones are changing the riel, they are modernising it.

l 15 07 22 Riel 58338

The riel changes and our young dancers come back from Los Angeles where they have won gold – beating sixty other countries to be crowned world champions.

l 15 05 15 flf a 5557

I see it everywhere. Just look at this picture I took at the Franschhoek Literary Festival. The demeanour of these three girls simply says: You are not gonna tell us what to think.

Technology

16 03 4 Woordfees 57758

Ons het dit gesien by die US Woordfees waar jongmense vertonings ontwrig het. Lees meer hier.

Nie alle protes is egter negatief nie.

p 16 02 19 ATKV Handevat 6960

Skep geleenthede

a 16 05 25 ATKB AJV Goudini 2048

a 16 05 25 ATKB AJV Goudini 2044

k 15 10 08 Tienertoneel0473

Hoërskool Noordheuwel by die ATKV-Tienertoneel

l 15 05 15 flf a 5557

Tegnologie

t_MG_6210

Dis nou maar ’n feit. As ek ek iets nie weet nie, vra ek ’n kind.

t 16 02 27 Greyton 7022

Dutch Courage tussen die Engelse

June 1, 2016 in Uncategorized

To help or not to help...

To help or not to help…

My gesin weet: Izak stap anders deur ’n boekwinkel as ander mense.

xx afkop

Soms word boeke op die algemene rak daarna so ’n bietjie, uhm, herrangskik as dit nodig is…

xx lapa

Verder kyk ek na die Afrikaanse boeke. Veral in Engelse plekke soos Durban.

But then one comes across the wonderful conundrum of finding ‘Dutch courage’ in the ‘African’ section on the shelf labelled ‘Afrikaanse Boeke’. (See picture at the top.)

Kyk, Dutch en Afrikaans is mos dieselfde ding in KZN.

For once I kept it there, Paige Nick. It was displayed elsewhere as well. I figured a few Afrikaans souls could do with a visit to the red-light districts of Amsterdam.
