Hoekom hardloop jy kaalvoet?

Daar is ’n baie redes, 144 van hulle. Hulle woon in die Durbanville Kinderhuis.

Why do you run barefoot?

There are many reason, 144 of them. They live in the Durbanville Children’s Home.

Hoekom hardloop jy?

My oupa Stoffel, vir wie ek baie lief was, het eendag met ’n stout glimlag gesê: “My kleinseun oefen om ’n lafaard te wees.”

Why do you run?

My grandfather, Stoffel, whom I loved dearly, once said with a naughty twinkle in his eye: “My grandson is training to be a coward.”

Toe probeer ek.

How did this barefoot thing happen?

I lived on a farm where I always walked barefoot. Then we moved to the city and suddenly it was no longer cool.

Luckily, I remembered again.

Greg Andrews, a mountain guide, taught me that one has much better grip on the mountain without shoes.

Peter Taylor, the legend, has run nearly thirty Two Oceans without shoes. He runs for the Guide Dog Association.

Then, when I had finished my first barefoot marathon, my club, Celtic Harriers, said: If you are going to be mad enough to do this, get a reason to do so. I then phoned the Durbanville Children’s Home and know I have 144 reasons.
